WEEK 01

Somewhere, a gear slips.

It's sunset on Halloween night; a night of celebration for the dead and the once-dead, a night of wariness for those bound closely to the spirits. Everything seems to move more freely on this night; the sensation of boundaries crossed is almost palpable.

A handful of those native to the city will certainly feel such. Between one step and the next, there's a feeling of pushing against something, something you didn't know was there before - and it gives. Physically, nothing changes, but you now know something is wrong, as though waking from a dream. Something has slipped, and you remember. Hajime will feel the sensation most keenly, as the things he recalls lack the sharp details of a demon's memory.

Meanwhile, somewhere in the Sixth, the New Arrivals all also find themselves taking steps - the first thing the group will become aware of in the city is being shoved out the door of what seems to be some kind of broken down factory. The alley they step into is wide enough to get a truck through, but shows little sign of human habitation; only a cardboard box, half-dissolved by rain, and a few bits of stray glass from broken bottles can be seen. Their phones and any other communication devices they possess all beep loudly, once, after the door slams shut.

Except... What door? When they next blink, while there's still a vaguely door-like outline, the concrete wall has changed; where the door was, there's a metal sheet, machined with faint circular patterns, seamlessly integrated with the concrete. Banging a fist on it produces a solid sound, as though the metal was at least an inch thick. Though there is a feeling of being watched in the alleyway, no one will approach until they leave it, not even a passerby walking the not-quite-yet-dark street at either end. Until they step out of the alley, it's as though they don't exist.

And there's a good amount of foot traffic passing the alleyway by. Though it tends towards people in a college student age bracket and people in a vaguely street punk sort of fashion with odd accessories, neither is an absolute rule by any rule. Following the flow of traffic leads to a run-down park that's mostly skatepark with a few picnic tables and a small greenspace that's been taken over for a dancefloor. The tables are covered in odd junk and there seems to be some trading going on.

Haseo and Ryoji will both have better knowledge of what the place is, and have standing invitations to the party that's starting up as the Sin-Eater trading post winds down.

Elsewhere: On a beach bordering the bay, a group of changelings holds a bonfire. Periodically, someone throws a papercraft skull into it with extreme prejudice; almost all the skulls are inhuman in some way, though the craftmanship of the paper-mache makes it difficult to tell at times. Those in the know have to be aware that such an overt display won't pass unnoticed by the Autumn King... But the tall and built woman who seems to be the center of the festivities shows no fear in the season of fear.

In the Residential District and even a few places in the Sixth, trick-or-treaters are as much a feature as they are every year. Children in costume run about with little concern for who they approach, while their parents maintain appropriate wariness from sidewalks or cars. A small group of children, however, galivants with no supervision - and there is something uncanny about the trio. It's best to give them a treat if they approach you, else you might find yourself the recipient of a cruel trick in return. Unlike the other trick-or-treaters, they're out and about well past midnight; nearly to dawn, in fact. When the sky begins to lighten, however, all three stop immediately in the middle of what they're doing and - with the sound of mad, fey giggling - bolt off in the direction of the farming district.

The prompts from the Test Drive also remain available for interaction.

The rest of the week:

Weather forecast: Though Halloween is a clear night, clouds steadily roll in for most of the rest of the week, hanging overcast in the sky with occasional breaks and sprinkles of rain slotted in. Mornings are foggy and chill, warming slightly in the afternoons but not varying all too much in temperature. Frost has yet to set in, though, making it possible to sleep outside if you have adequate cover, but it won't be very fun.

Moon Phase: The 30th was a New Moon, so Halloween's sky is decorated by a fingernail crescent that grows to almost a half moon throughout the week.

The Clean-Up: After Halloween, of course, everything must slowly go back to normal. Most folks clean up their own messes throughout the first morning of November, but shards of gutted and thrown pumpkins can be found most everywhere, and at the park where the Sin-Eaters partied, a lone Security Officer inspects the aftermath for signs of unusual activity. Aside from the remains of pumpkins, which are mostly left to rot, decorations vanish over the course of the week and all but a few are gone by Thursday morning.

The College: Though enrollment for the fall semester is over, the deadlines for winter are fast approaching, and there are a number of tables set up in a large area to entice prospective students. Most of them are manned by undergraduates, but the English program's table is staffed most of the time by a single Tired Professor with mousy brown hair. Occasionally, the Tech Student at the next table over takes pity on the man, bringing him a hot-chocolate to help warm his fingers.

"How can you not be sure what you like?"

Knowing what you like is, in her opinion, one of the actually easiest things. She always knows what she likes. (She also never has had to make a decision of the dimension of what subject to pick in college, but she doesn't realize that.)

"In this case, it's kind of that I like too many things? So it's hard to figure out which one I like the most that's the hard part. And whatever I pick will probably decide what kind of job I get when I finish university, so it's pretty important!" Hopefully that makes sense.

"Then you should do the thing that you can make the most money with and that you can transfer the most easily if you ever have to switch your occupation."

She's worked with way too many defectors of various kinds from various places to not have this criterion high up on a list of things that you should think about when you work towards a job that'll make you employed with some group or corporation.

See? It's easy.

"Oh." Huh. That's... not how people around here tend to think, but ok. That actually makes a decent amount of sense, given his lifestyle. "I guess I'll have to think about that too, then."

She nods, sure that it will make picking things a lot easier, because it has to rule out all the impractical or too specialized jobs. ...Thinking about Hiro, intense specialization can be useful, too, but only if you want to become so indispensable that your corporation or organization will do anything to get you back alive and well. She doubts that they would have taken no for an answer even though they pretended to ask (while the dwarf was half-naked and chained to the ground in a containment cell. Sounds extremely like they cared about his free consent, really).

Anyway. Making sure that you can move is good.

"If you need help with picking, you can ask me. I'm good at picking out things."

"All right. I'm keep you in mind." Assuming she sends him a message or gives him her number, eventually. "But yeah, that's kind of what my life is like. What sort of things do you like?" Hopefully he won't scare her off with questions, after having gone this far in the conversation.

"Urban Brawl!" She lights up at that. It's just a lot of fun to watch, okay, and for good reason immensely popular. "I can't decide on a team, though, there are a few really good ones, and even they change players fairly frequently." Casualties and all that. It happens when you bring armed weapons into a game, and in Urban Brawl everyone is armed like that.

[personal profile] dangerouslyinlove 2016-10-30 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Ryoji smiles a little, happy that she's so happy, but, um... "Is that some kind of street fighting thing?" He has no idea what you are talking about child. Also is that really the kind of thing you should be watching???
runs: (oh *shit*)

[personal profile] runs 2016-10-30 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's a sport!" She stares at him in disbelief. How can anyone not know Urban Brawl? "...Do you not have it here?"

Okay, just where did she end up. This is terrible. No AR, no Matrix apparently, and now there's no Urban Brawl.

"...You have twelve players and a medic, you have to get the ball into the other team's goal. One team's on the forward until the ball has been on the ground for ten seconds, then the other team gets to be forward. And the one with the most scores winds. You can also win by the other team having no players left in game, but that doesn't happen very often."

[personal profile] dangerouslyinlove 2016-10-30 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Ryoji shakes his head. "No, we don't. Sorry. ...It sounds a little bit like soccer, though." More violent, though, if the inclusion of 'medic' and 'no players left' is any indication. Also it's called Urban Brawl. But if it's a sport where she's from, maybe they just raise people weird there.

...But that begs the question of where, exactly, she's from.
runs: (considering all that)

[personal profile] runs 2016-10-30 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"...There's similarities."

She's seen soccer being played. It seemed a bit boring, though she guesses that that it is a good sport for people who can't afford to get injured terribly. More something to play yourself than something to watch.

"Do you play soccer?"
dangerouslyinlove: (Ryoji [With my scarf])

[personal profile] dangerouslyinlove 2016-10-30 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"I used to, when I was a kid, but when I got older and busier I stopped." Like a vast majority of kids who play soccer. "Do you play any sports?"
runs: (considering all that)

[personal profile] runs 2016-10-30 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
She shrugs.

"I just run around. There aren't many children where I live." Even people who have close to no money don't want to raise their children next to a waste facility if they can help it, so it's mostly old people who already lived there before the facility was built. If they lived further to the northeast, nobody would care, probably, but there is still just enough money in her area for people to be able to be slightly picky. ...That's not the reason why she doesn't play any sports, but it sounds like a good enough explanation.
dangerouslyinlove: (Ryoji [With my scarf])

[personal profile] dangerouslyinlove 2016-10-30 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a reason that makes a decent amount of sense, at least, so Ryoji will take it at face value for now. "Ah, ok. What kind of stuff do you do for fun, then?" You probably do something other than watch not-soccer, after all.
runs: (I got this)

Laze around, chuck things off the coffee table, hunt mice and poke her nose into things that she shouldn't poke her nose into. Also, more recently, going on runs - breaking and entering, theft, abductions, assassinations, and so on.

Uh....

"Everything that I do I do for fun." She grins. It's true, mostly. Ivokat makes her study and train, which is boring sometimes but the results are awesome so she tries to go along with it. And sometimes she has to do things that are either boring or not interesting to make sure that the team stays alive and well, but she can do that. In the larger picture, there is nothing in her life that she doesn't do because she likes it and/or it is fun, though.
dangerouslyinlove: (Ryoji [Happiness])

[personal profile] dangerouslyinlove 2016-10-30 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that gets Ryoji to smile brightly. "I think that's a great way to live." Comes from having died when you were 10 years old- you gain a real appreciation for things like living. He knows some Sin-Eaters handle it differently than he does, but he's definitely the kind that wants to celebrate every moment he's alive, enjoy it, and just appreciate how wonderful it is. One day, he's going to lose it again.

But that's really not the kind of conversation he should have with a kid. He knows that much, at least.

"The best."

She got a good lot in life, in her opinion. Sure, some things suck, but most of them imply things that she wouldn't want, anyway - she will never be able to have a SIN unless she moves to very specific places, but why would she want one? They only cause trouble.

The little old lady that she lives with is really nice and accepting of her having turned free-roaming, her shadowrunner teammates are okay to nice, and she gets to do all kinds of things that are nice or fun or interesting. There are always things that could be more - she had real tuna once at a reception that Eärendil took her to, and it was a-ma-zing, for example - but looking at what she's seen of the world, there will always be a more that you lack.

...She'd still like to have more real tuna in her life.

"How do you live?"
dangerouslyinlove: (Ryoji [Happiness])

[personal profile] dangerouslyinlove 2016-10-30 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Ryoji thinks a moment, taking the question seriously. "Well," he says, "I focus on enjoying myself a lot, and doing things I like to do, and just having fun whenever I can. But I also like to help people, so whenever I can also try to do things that will it better for other people too!" It's a pretty basic breakdown, but... that is how he lives. He's not a selfish person, but he does like to enjoy himself and doesn't much care if people think he shouldn't be as long as he's not hurting anyone. And he'll do his best to defend and help the people who can't help themselves- usually ghosts. Who don't always recognize that he's trying to help, but some of them do and will thank him for freeing them once and for all.

It's kind of a crazy life, and a weird one when compared to normal people, but... he thinks it suits him. He doesn't even mind going to the Underworld that much, when he's doing it to learn more about how to help the dead. (It still bothers him some, because, you know. He's not crazy. Not completely, anyway.)
runs: (considering all that)

[personal profile] runs 2016-10-30 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Half of that makes perfect sense to her, and half of it is strange.

"What is so nice about helping other people?"

She knows what is nice about helping her teammates or Chantalle, but he's implying that he likes helping complete strangers.
dangerouslyinlove: (Ryoji [Happiness])

[personal profile] dangerouslyinlove 2016-10-30 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a good question. But he shrugs. "I don't know. It just makes me happy when other people are also happy. I'm not really sure anyone can explain why that is." It just feels nice to be helpful, and needed, and to see other people smile. Or even just to know that you did something good.
runs: (I got this)

[personal profile] runs 2016-10-30 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
...No, that really is no explanation, and the frustration with that makes her grow impatient. She wants to know more about this place instead of talking about feelings. Perhaps if she takes to the roofs she can at least get an idea of what it looks like better...

"I need to go to my friends. I'll see you around."

And with that she runs back through the alleyway and into the deep shadows that the walls throw into it. The thought of trailing him has been momentarily forgotten, but she will likely try to find him at some point later in the week.
dangerouslyinlove: (Ryoji [Not sure about this])

[personal profile] dangerouslyinlove 2016-10-30 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
...That was sudden. Ryoji barely manages to wave after her before she's gone. But, with any luck, she will actually get in touch with him again.
